Statement of Policy

The mission of the Cuyahoga Falls High School “Tiger Times” is to report the news accurately, fairly, and thoroughly, to the utmost of the students’ ability. The students will share with their peers, teachers, and community members the important issues of the day, their reactions to those issues, and present possibilities for making a difference in the world.

In keeping with the education fundamentals at the foundation of this publication, it is in the best interest of the students who participate, and the students and community members who read the paper that the news be accurately reported.

In order to fulfill that responsibility, the students will make decisions on all content. The students will decide what news will be reported in the publication, in what format, and how it will be designed. This paper was created to fulfill their need to have an open forum for expression. Any views and opinions in the publication may not be the position of the adviser, school, school system or administration.

The student editors and staff of the publication will follow professional journalism standards at all times. These standards include responsible reporting with an eye for accuracy, objectivity and fairness. They will edit for proper grammar and verify all facts in their stories to the best of their ability.

The student editors will review all stories and the students themselves will have final say on the subject matter published. They will not publish any material that is libelous, obscene, creates a “material and substantial” disruption of the school process, is an invasion of privacy, copyright infringement, or that advertises products or services that are illegal to minors. Please see Law of the Student Press by the Student Press Law Center for definitions of the above.

The adviser’s role is to encourage and support the students while they exercise their First Amendment rights. He/she may coach and discuss content with the students during the writing process and will educate the students on responsible journalism practices. Following the code of ethics created by the Journalism Education Association, the adviser will not act as a censor or decision maker for this publication.

The publication accepts letters to the editor. All letters must be 300 words or less and include a name, grade and address. Letters should be addressed to “Tiger Times” and delivered to an editor, adviser or the high school main office. All submissions are verified and publication is at the discretion of the student editors and staff. Letters may be returned for re-submission for grammatical errors or length.
